Editor's note:
Again this year, I was happy to attend IMPA test day at Pocono International Raceway. I was in pursuit of Toyota's PR Dept. and the rumours behind a US importation of a hybrid-electric four wheel drive van.

Upon my arrival to the track, I saw the GEMs zipping around the pit area. I had a conversation with the GEM Representative Barry Carr.

He was very knowledgable about EV's, as well as other electric vehicle events, such as the Tour de Sol. Although I did not drive the GEM, I had the opportunity to videotape a ride from the back seat with my new DV camera around the pit area. The Quicktime video can be found here. ( 4.8 mb )

Additional information about the GEM:
If you have seen Ford's Think EV, and seen the GEM, you would notice a similar look. That is because they had the same designer. The GEM currently has solid plastic doors soon to be available. The GEM two passenger costs about $7,000 and weighs approx. 980 lbs. The GEM two passenger short bed costs about $8,300 and weighs about 1850 lbs. The GEM four passenger costs about $9,000 and weighs approx. 1280 lbs. The motor and controller are built by GE.

While watching people test drive the GEM, I noticed that they did not expect to have no power steering, and had a forceful time turning the steering wheel when the GEM was not moving. I could envision seeing some elderly people having a hard time with such a vehicle, and could see the need for a small power assisted steering device to be incorporated.
