1987 Toyota Custom Camper Van "Toyhobo"
It was the summer of 1995 that I bought this vehicle, and spent about two months
customizing the inside. My idea was to return to California where I was employed
by Frey Vineyards, and continue driving wine deliveries up and down the north coast
with my own vehicle. I measured the width of two cases of wine for a perfect fit and a
pull down bed for when the delivery was completed. There is a 50 watt Siemams solar panel
on the roof, a Holly Solar battery charge monitor, and two giant deep cycle batteries
mounted in the cabinet underneath the pulll down bed. A 12 Volt solid state Igloo refrigerator
is custom installed in the cabinet, as well as a 5 gallon plastic water bottle, and electric
pump for showers. I had several generations of very small custom built propane water heaters
that were once my pride and joy, but my latest model didn't hold up, so I removed it.
Note the sink and mirror! Currently this vehicle has been back and forth to CA from PA
twice ( soon a third ) and has over 270,000 miles on it. Because of my poor management
of transmission and rear gear oil, along with the heavy loads of many cases of wine,
I had to replace the transmission, and the rear end.
