Conceptual Vehicle Designer
LUIGI COLANI
A brief biography.
According to Luigi Colani, nature creates perfect designs. " Straight lines do not exist in nature ", explains the renowned designer. " That's why I believe in bio-design which uses a vocabulary whose inspiration comes from organic shapes with their violence and sensuality. "

It's this belief that has resulted in Colani's reputation as today's most unconventional product designer and creator of extravagant ideas. A design genius who has also found tremendous acceptance in the industrial world.
Bom August 2,1928, and raised in Berlin, Luigi Colani was one of of four children. The children were never given any toys, but were encouraged to make their own from blocks, paper and carton paper. Luigi naturally absorbed the technique of creating his own visions. He studied painting and art at the Academy of Art in Berlin for four years. Soon after, he traveled to France to study car design, race car development, and fiberglass body manufacture. Simultaneously, he studied aerodynamics at the University of Paris. Back in Berlin in 1954, Luigi was awarded the Golden Rose for presenting a sports coupe based on the Fiat 11 00. Colani also produced a two-seater fiberglass kit car called the "Colani GT Spyder", whereupon 500 kits were produced.

His philosophy of ergonomic design can be seen in world famous product designs including Canon's easy-to-grip T-90 camera and the aerodynamic form of Sony headphones. Colani's design accomplishments include golf equipment, shoes, eyewear, jewelry, luggage, lighters, automobiles, airplanes, telephones, and bed linen for major U.S., European and Japanese manufacturers such as Fiat, Yamaha, Daiwa, Skyway, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Stern, the weekly magazine of Europe, called him the "Leonardo Da Vinci of the 20th Century." His latest endeavor, AUTOMORROW'89 showcases alternative transport vehicles and futuristic designs in an exhibition and lecture series across the United States. The tour will then travel through Japan, Russia and Europe.
