TNE 3 : Solar Electric Racer | | TNE-2 was the first solar vehicle to utilize the stored 'solar umbrella" concept in the Diado-Lioxan Australia World Solar Challenge '93. TEAM NEW ENGLAND is a confederation of individuals from schools, business and industry dedicated to building versatile solar/electric vehicles, racing them to win, and educating people about non-polluting, fossil-fuel-free transportation.
The group includes students, faculty, and alumni from Northern Essex Community College, Boston University, UMass Lowell, M.I.T., Northeastern, San Francisco St. U. and Princeton with experience in design & construction of many different types of successful electric and solar-electric vehicles.

The concept also demonstrates real -world solar-electric charging stations. TNE-2 averaged about 200 miles per day at 60 mph across the Australian Outback on the energy gained from one 4-hour solar charging "siesta" per day.
TNE-2 broke former records for speed and endurance hi the American Tour de Sol '94, the Mt. Washington "Climb to the Clouds" '94, the San Jose Velodrome Electrathon Challenge '94, and the 22nd Annual Sificon Valley E.A.A. Rally '94.
